natural mattresses
Natural mattresses are designed to have minimal environmental impact—close to zero when crafted entirely by hand with natural materials, avoiding industrial processing. They’re both healthy and eco-conscious, unlike many mass-produced mattresses on the market. These often come from aggressive price-driven production cycles that may appear cost-effective, but in reality compromise on quality and durability. Natural fibers like horsehair and wool help absorb and release moisture efficiently, unlike synthetic ones which retain it and can cause humidity and mold issues.
Mattresses without foam
Is it possible to make a mattress without foam? A modern spring mattress without polyurethane? That’s a valid question when looking for a new mattress. Models without polyurethane foam include premium natural mattresses crafted with traditional methods. The benefit? Reduced overheating and better moisture management, thanks to natural materials like horsehair and wool which regulate heat and humidity differently than synthetic components.
100% natural mattresses are extremely rare and typically handcrafted. They feature 100% cotton fabric exteriors with carded natural fillings such as wool, horsehair, kapok, or cotton. For many, the image of a grandmother carding wool by hand or an old mattress maker working outdoors is nostalgic but it also reminds us that natural craftsmanship hasn’t disappeared. Beyond industrial foam production, some manufacturers still believe in creating cool, breathable, natural mattresses, Gabrielli Bedding among them. They combine tradition with innovation, offering natural wool mattresses and models with horsehair and spring systems, finished with untreated cotton covers that are perfect for warm summer nights.
Looking for a mattress artisan who can re-card your wool mattress? Services are still available in select areas.
How much does a natural double mattress cost?
A fully natural double mattress generally starts around €1500. The price varies depending on the type and quantity of natural fibers used, as well as how they are processed. For example, mattresses with thick layers of carded wool or horsehair are more costly than those with thin industrially laid wool pads.
