Sheep Wool Mattresses
English refined wool mattresses, production and carding. What is the best wool for mattresses? Merino wool, camel wool, all excellent fibers, but Scottish wool and refino (pronounced refìno) are the best wools; the latter, English refino, is the best wool for mattresses because it yields a lot after carding and retains a lot of elasticity and strength, allowing the mattress to last a long time.
Animal Hair Mattresses
Horsehair is excellent because it is thermoregulating, cool, and does not retain moisture. The best horsehair is obviously from horses, of the blonde type rather than dark, also to avoid it being mixed with hair from other animals (like cow hair, which is evidently much less valuable, with all due respect to the cow).
Artisan Mattress Manufacturing
The traditional artisan craftsmanship of the past is still the process used today, preserving tradition for the best result. Everything is done by hand, apart from the sewing of the cover which is machine-made; the mattress is carded, filled with wool or horsehair, closed, edged, and hand-tufted.
