Natural mattress filled entirely with horsehair

This Gabrielli mattress is handmade in Italy with a filling composed entirely of horsehair, enclosed in a white 100% cotton damask cover.

The filling contains no wool, polyester fibres, memory foam or other polyurethane foams. Its comfort, breathability and support come from the natural characteristics of horsehair, which is washed, combed, curled and carefully distributed by hand.

The natural properties of horsehair

Horsehair is a natural fibre appreciated for its resilience, durability and breathability.

Its open structure allows air to circulate through the mattress and helps moisture produced by the body disperse more quickly. This contributes to a fresher, drier and better-ventilated sleeping environment.

Unlike compact synthetic fillings, carded horsehair retains numerous small air spaces between its fibres. This promotes ventilation and prevents the mattress from creating an excessively enveloping sensation around the body.

Resilient and naturally ventilated comfort

Horsehair compresses under body weight and naturally tends to recover its shape. This provides responsive and dynamic support without the sinking sensation commonly associated with memory foam.

The air held between the curled fibres creates a comfortably supportive surface that remains well ventilated throughout the night.

Two depths and two quantities of horsehair

The mattress is available in two versions. Both are filled entirely with horsehair, but the deeper version contains a more generous quantity of material and provides a fuller, more substantial structure.

The quantities shown refer to the 160 × 190 cm double size and vary proportionally for other dimensions. As this is a handmade product made from natural fibres, its finished weight and depth may vary slightly.

Documented moosburger® horsehair quality

The horsehair used in this mattress is supplied with a moosburger® quality certificate.

According to the certificate, the material undergoes continuous internal quality controls and meets requirements exceeding the ÖNORM S1690 standard. It is hygienically processed and washed with natural soap, without chemical additives during treatment or processing.

The material is controlled in accordance with European Union veterinary requirements under Veterinary No. AT TE80179EG, with OETI reference 148589.

A traditional luxury filling

Horsehair has traditionally been used to fill high-quality mattresses, toppers, pillows and upholstered furniture.

Today it is mainly found in premium and artisanal mattresses because it requires carefully selected raw material and a more complex manufacturing process than commonly used synthetic fibres.

Its combination of resilience, ventilation and durability makes horsehair particularly suitable for natural mattresses designed for long-term use.

Handmade by Gabrielli in Italy

Gabrielli has been producing handmade mattresses for over fifty years, preserving the traditional techniques used to work natural fillings.

The horsehair is opened, carded and manually distributed inside the cotton cover. The mattress is then shaped, closed and finished by hand.

This careful process creates an even filling that remains elastic and rich in air. Small differences in height, weight and finishing are natural characteristics of an individually handmade product and should not be considered defects.

Care and maintenance

Rotate the mattress regularly from head to foot and turn it over to encourage an even settlement of the natural filling.

Horsehair may gradually settle during use. Regular rotation helps preserve an even sleeping surface, while professional carding can redistribute and revive the filling when required.

Reusable natural filling

Horsehair can be removed, cleaned, carded again and reused to regenerate the mattress or produce other naturally filled products.

This possibility extends the useful life of the raw material and reduces waste compared with fillings that cannot easily be separated and reused.

Standard and custom sizes

The handmade construction allows the mattress to be produced in the main Single, Double, European King and Super King sizes, as well as in custom dimensions.

A different approach to the luxury horsehair mattress

Horsehair is used by some of the world’s most established luxury bed makers for its ventilation, resilience and ability to recover its shape. Gabrielli interprets this material through a distinctly Italian and artisanal approach.

Rather than using horsehair as one layer among several different materials, this mattress is filled entirely with carded horsehair. The 160 × 190 cm size contains approximately 14 kg in the 12 cm version and approximately 20 kg in the 16 cm version.
