Which piston strength should you choose?
Piston strength to choose for storage beds in sizes 160x190, 140x190, 120x190 or 200 cm, 180x190/200
The pistons are identical in shape and type of fittings; what changes is the force, expressed in N, i.e. newtons. If the piston is weak, you will struggle to lift the bed but it will be easier to lower; conversely, if it is strong, lifting will be easy but pulling the bed down may be hard work.
A single bed takes 600N pistons and a small double bed 800N; a 140 cm wide French double bed or a standard 160 cm double must have at least 1000N, or 1100N if the mattress is deep or, more generally, heavier than standard; a 170 cm bed needs at least 1100 or 1250; to lift a king size 180x200 cm bed base, 1250, or 1450 only with a latex mattress (latex is well known to weigh twice as much as, for example, a memory foam mattress). Whether the bed is 195 or 200 cm long rather than 190 makes little difference. If the bed is motorised, i.e. with electric bed bases with a motor, 1450N pistons are needed.
Consider the weight of the mattress when choosing the piston
The type of mattress matters. The sizes and strengths given above apply to mattresses of standard weight, such as memory foam or pocket spring mattresses, but if the mattress is latex or very deep we recommend the next strength up. Example: for a 160x190 latex mattress, the recommended pistons are 1250N instead of 1000N.
The pistons for single beds fit all beds with bed bases from 80x190 up to 90x200; if your bed is 100 wide, buy the pistons for small double beds for 120x190 to 120x200. The 1000 N replacement pistons for double beds fit beds from 140x190 up to 160x190 or 160x200. For beds from 170x190 up to king size 180x200, the 1200 N double bed pistons are a must, and they are also recommended for all very heavy mattresses, for example over 30 kg.
