What is the best mattress for children

  1. What does a child need to improve sleep quality?

  2. Which is better for a child aged 0 to 5: memory foam, latex, or rubber mattress? Here are the best natural mattresses for children

Sleep for children plays a slightly different role than it does for adults and is fundamental for healthy growth and the baby's psychophysical well-being. We often care and worry about the orthopedic aspect, which is very important, but let's not forget that peaceful and uninterrupted sleep can promote the correct functioning of all physiological functions.

1- The room must be clean; avoid as much as possible using upholstered furnishings that could trap dust and thus mites, or treat them frequently with a specific vacuum cleaner;

2- Protect them from light. Darkness at night is essential for peaceful sleep, but also for the skin, which regenerates in the dark. This natural recharge is at its maximum in children and gradually diminishes. In fact, adults who use night creams try to compensate for this age-related deficiency;

1. The child needs a mattress that is not rigid but also not too soft;

The best mattresses for children

We won't recommend the cheapest mattresses on Amazon, but mattresses with only natural elements and fibers, no plastics or polyester. The best investment for your child's health, for their first years of life, is direct contact with natural materials, not with mattresses and pillows made from petroleum synthesis, with glues and solvents.

Latex, memory foam, or spring mattress? Which is better?

A rubber mattress for a child? No, thank you. But it's very difficult, because this would rule out 99% of mattresses on the market, since in addition to memory foam or clearly synthetic latex mattresses that might hide the use of CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons), even spring mattresses have a rubber box containing the springs, so there's no escaping rubber, not to mention child mattress covers made of polyester or with chemical treatments.

The only way to protect oneself is to avoid these mattresses and choose natural mattresses filled with noble fibers like cotton and kapok. Kapok is preferable because it is more breathable and more reliable in terms of safety, being naturally anti-suffocation.

The best mattress for children? For my daughter, I chose a natural mattress, handcrafted, so not a mattress stored in some warehouse waiting to be purchased, but a mattress made especially for her. The naturalness of the raw material protects me from any surprises related to various foams and rubbers whose origin and content I can never be sure of.

What mattress did I choose? A kapok mattress, "vegetable silk" with unparalleled thermoregulation and breathability properties. It can be made in all sizes, precisely because it is custom-made and handcrafted.

Is a Memory foam mattress suitable for children?

Memory foam's function is to conform to the body. A Memory foam mattress is never all Memory foam; it's a combination of layers that work in synergy. Is a Memory foam mattress good for children? For adults, certainly, but for children up to 8 years old, we advise against it because children sweat a lot, and Memory foam, being thermosensitive, tends to retain heat. It's different for children aged 8 and up, where Memory foam, if it's just a thin layer of a few centimeters, can increase mattress comfort, providing benefits to the child/teenager (see an example).

How is an anti-suffocation baby mattress made?

The anti-suffocation mattress, like the pillow, is made with materials that ensure breathability. Open-cell latex (like open-cell foam) means exactly that. Mattresses made in other ways are hot because they retain heat and moisture, in addition to being dangerous because they are not anti-suffocation!

Mattresses for Children and Teenagers

From the fifth or sixth year of age (a reference age, which is obviously an example), which could correspond to the transition from a 60x120 cm cot to a single bed of 80x190 or 200 cm (see the mattress for teenagers), we start to wonder what the best mattress is to accompany an important growth phase from child to teenager and subsequently from teenager to adult.

Which mattress to buy

Is it necessary to buy a mattress at six years old, also thinking about when they will be over 13 or maybe 15? Or will I necessarily have to buy a mattress for each growth phase? What mattress to buy for a growing child or a teenager whose body is transforming from child to adult?

The phase of a child from 6 to 13 years old allows us to make considerations on weight; in this age group, children do not have large weight differences. The real transformation, as we know, comes in adolescence.

The first consideration is that a child from 5 or 6 years to 10 or 11 will have a small weight that will not stress the mattress as it does for adults, but in many cases, children "live" on the bed. They study, watch TV, play. Stresses that could deform the mattress. The FIRST SUGGESTION is therefore to prefer a rubber and foam mattress (see example) over a spring mattress, which is more delicate, especially on the sides.

Before asking ourselves which mattress to buy for the child, we must decide whether we prefer to get an excellent mattress to accompany the child's growth from 5 or 6 years old until adolescence (16 years, 18 years, 20 years?) or prefer a decent mattress while keeping costs down because we consider it a temporary mattress and will change it at 14. In the first case, choose a quality mattress of a certain height, at least 18 cm, whether removable or not matters little, as it is good to protect it with a breathable waterproof mattress protector even if we no longer fear bedwetting, preferably an anti-allergenic mattress.

Children's mattress sizes

The three stages are bassinet/pram, cot, standard single mattress 80x190 or 200 cm.

The standard size for a baby cot mattress is 60x120, 125, or 130 cm. We are talking about the cot, not the bassinet mattress, which is usually smaller, about 50x90 cm but can vary depending on the manufacturer, and usually has an oval shape, not rectangular. These two phases are quickly overcome, generally within 4 years of age, children move from the cot to the "big bed." Pillows should also be purchased in suitable sizes and very low, between 2 cm (for the bassinet) and 6 cm, for the cot.

Then there's the pram mattress with approximate dimensions of 30x70x3 cm, also depending on the manufacturer.

If you are already making the transition to a big bed, meaning a single mattress of standard dimensions that can vary from 80 to 90 cm wide and 190 or 200 cm long, also try to carefully assess the height. If it is a bed with sides or an pull-out bed, you might need a mattress 14 cm high up to a maximum of 20 cm. In this case, if the child is still small, you need to find a pillow with "adult" width and length, i.e., about 45x72 cm, but with reduced heights, 6 cm, 8 cm, 10 cm maximum, but in the latter case, it must be very soft, like the Planet 10 Simmons latex pillows (continue below for more details).

The baby's pillow? Is it useful?

cuscini buoni per il bambino

Specialists confirm that in the first few months of life, a pillow is not needed for newborns, but the use of a 2 cm high anti-suffocation pillow is still recommended to promote safe breathing.

The anti-suffocation feature is essential (see above); the baby's pillow should be chosen based on age. All pillows should have alabel applied by the manufacturer (the pillows chosen and offered on our website indicate the recommended age range in the features.

The best baby pillows are those that are non-deformable, meaning not stuffed with fiber or wool/cotton, but with an internal slab. For babies, latex, memory foam, and foam pillows are recommended, but all strictly open-cell (as mentioned above). A 2 cm high pillow is suitable for the first twelve months of life, then for children from one to 3 years old, a 4 cm high pillow is suitable. It may seem high, but it compresses under the weight of the head, adapting. The baby latex pillow can be purchased on our website:

Pillow for the child for a single bed 80x190 or larger

If your child is already on an adult bed, meaning a single size of 80 or 90 cm wide and 190 or 200 cm long, a standard width and length pillow is more suitable, i.e., about 72x42 cm, but with a height appropriate for the child's small stature and a density (which determines firmness) suitable for the weight of the head and neck. Here are the Pirelli and Simmons latex pillows available on this site at a discounted price, with these characteristics:

A good quality Memory foam pillow for children, highly appreciated, that we recommend is Memo Breeze with special shaping that creates a double height, making it usable during multiple stages of the baby's growth and with an anti-mite Greenfirst cover.

Is your child already in a large bed measuring 80x190 or 90x190 cm? Then they need a low pillow, with an appropriate height, but with a standard width between 70 cm and 75 cm and a length of 40 or 42 cm, such as the Anti-Suffocation Memory Foam Pillow:

The best pillows for children also come with an anti-mite cover (like the Greenfirst pillow cover, a natural anti-mite treatment).
