Mattresses for Wall Beds
How is a wall bed mattress made? It's easy to create a quality mattress without worrying about height, perhaps with various layers of memory foam and independent springs. It's more challenging to make a good mattress with height constraints, as is the case with mattresses for convertible beds and, more specifically, wall beds.
Mattresses for Wall Beds
Modern wall beds are available for mattresses up to 24 cm high. In this case, it's easier to find a suitable mattress for the wall bed, but a bed cabinet containing such a high mattress will have a depth of almost 50 cm and will extend to 220 cm when open. Often, the required footprint is much smaller, necessitating the choice of shallower wall beds, which in turn require a thinner mattress.
Thickness of Mattresses Suitable for Wall Beds
When a manufacturer provides an indication of the maximum height for the mattress, for example, "Recommended Mattress Height approx. 15 cm," they might not consider the need to close the bed already made up with a blanket in addition to sheets. Therefore, the advice is to allow at least 1 cm of tolerance, meaning, in this example, a wall bed mattress of 14 cm in height.
Which Mattress to Choose for a Wall Bed
Are pocket spring mattresses suitable for wall beds? If the available height is less than 20 cm, we advise against pocket spring mattresses for double wall beds or other sizes. They are too elaborate to fit into heights below 20 cm.
Leaving aside futons or old-fashioned wool mattresses, which are recommended for wall beds if you like them, if mattress heights are limited, a memory foam mattress is preferable for wall beds, or one without memory foam, but always made of foam, without springs.
Often, a mattress with an appropriate weight is required for the bed to open and close easily. Therefore, a latex mattress is not recommended for wall beds, partly due to concerns about humidity and breathability when the mattress remains closed in the cabinet.
