Choosing a Mattress

What to know before buying a mattress

Choosing the right mattress is considered a complicated task, at least for those who understand its importance. We always start with the type of mattress, materials, and price, overlooking other basic and essential aspects. Below are some tips to consider when purchasing a new mattress:

  • The bed and base the mattress will rest on;
  • The measurements;
  • Mattress height;
  • Thermoregulation.

What type of bed do I own

The type of bed or mattress base is crucial. A Sommier with a wooden platform will provide different support compared to a slatted bed base, offering linear and non-deformable support to the mattress, rather than elastic and high-performance, as wooden slats would. If the mattress base is rigid, the mattress must be more elastic and highly adaptable, as the ergonomic aspect is entirely delegated to the mattress. Remember that a rigid base will put more stress on the mattress, which will require more attention. Rotate it often head-to-foot. See more information on the mattress maintenance page.

Mattress measurements

This is the main cause of mattress returns. One out of two customers ignores or confuses their mattress measurements, ignores their importance, often believing that "double" means everything, but there are dozens of intermediate sizes, with 5 cm differences. So what to do? Measure the bed frame, not the mattress, but the base, from the metal edge (in slatted frames) width and length. After taking the base measurements, consult with the retailer. Consult the page dedicated to information on mattress sizes.

Mattress thermoregulation

Especially when we buy a mattress in winter, we don't consider the risk of buying a mattress that is too warm. Non-breathable materials retain heat and release it, creating an unbearable climate. Ask specific questions, choose fresh and good quality materials.

Choosing the best mattress

Mattress reviews are not very significant; I'm not saying they're false, but people's needs are different, and reviews are written in the moment. We don't have the opportunity to read reviews after 3 months, 1 year, or 5 years of mattress use. Read them, but don't let them be the sole guide for your choice.
