How the mattress warranty works

As we know, a warranty is a tool to protect the consumer through rules described in specific legislation, which may vary depending on the good purchased. What the warranty covers is simply a manufacturing defect, meaning a malfunction of the mattress, in this case, due to a production defect and/or unsuitable materials used in the production cycle. A simple indentation or sagging of the mattress could in many cases be justified by the manufacturer as wear and tear and not a defect in its constituent materials. In many cases this is true, because the duration of the warranty is not the lifespan of the mattress itself, even if this is intentionally implied by advertisements, TV shopping, and offers.

How long a mattress warranty lasts

Mattresses are guaranteed for 2 years by law, like all goods, but today the warranty is mistakenly associated with the mattress's lifespan. Some advertisements and TV shopping programs, announcing 20-year warranties, conveyed a misleading message that a mattress could last for two decades. Since the warranty is a protection against manufacturing defects, it does not cover the quality of the mattress, but rather its obvious defects. This means a mattress could be of poor quality and last only a few years, but it will never be replaced by the manufacturer if there isn't an obvious manufacturing defect. Therefore, the manufacturer could, absurdly, claim the warranty lasts 100 years. Usually, a defect emerges after a short period of use, and not after 19 years, for example.

When is the mattress warranty valid?

As we know, a warranty is a tool to protect the consumer; if the good is defective, it must be replaced or repaired at the manufacturer's expense (for information on how to collect or redeliver a mattress to be replaced or repaired, see below). A manufacturer's requirement, often found in the user and maintenance manual accompanying the mattress, is the use of a suitable bed frame. A mattress deformed due to improper use on an unsuitable base, used as a sofa, or folded loses its warranty.

Warranty for individually pocketed spring mattresses

The suitable bed frame for individually pocketed spring mattresses, as required by the warranty, must have at least 17 slats and 2 beams under the slats, not just one.

Is there a difference in warranty for memory foam or latex mattresses?

There is no real difference in the warranty for latex or memory foam mattresses; 13 slats is the minimum the bed frame must have, and a double bar under the slats is a recommendation we always give, regardless of the warranty. Using a solid base without holes can lead to moisture stains on all mattresses. Even with the use of a storage bed, the mattress warranty might provide the manufacturer with grounds to invalidate the warranty if, for example, the bed's "drawer" is too full. Airing is essential, or use an appropriate mattress cover to create air circulation (click for info).

What happens if the purchased mattress is not suitable, I don't like it, or it has a defect?

How do you proceed if the mattress does not conform to what was chosen or if I simply bought the wrong mattress and am not comfortable with it after the first few nights of use?

Mattress warranty, what the regulations say: The consumer must go to the seller and deliver the defective product or arrange for its return. In case it's impossible to transport the item, defects must be reported, showing the relevant invoice.
The seller, after verifying the validity of the claim reported by the consumer, will take possession of the product (or acknowledge the complaint) and issue a receipt form to the consumer, indicating a maximum period of 60 days within which the repair or replacement will be carried out.

According to the regulations, it is the customer's responsibility to return the mattress or bear the courier costs. However, for some major brands such as Simmons Ennerev or Dorelan mattress warranties, a technician's home visit is provided to verify the defect, and any collection is at the manufacturer's expense.

Warranty for mattresses purchased online, right of withdrawal, and mattress trial period

Always speaking of the actual mattress warranty, i.e., regarding a defect in the mattress, the same rule already expressed applies. A different matter is the right of withdrawal within 14 days of purchasing the mattress made outside of a physical store, specifically by mail, so an online purchase, at your home with a representative's visit as with Fabricatore mattresses for example, or perhaps over the phone by purchasing the mattress from Eminflex TV shopping. In all these cases, the return is at the consumer's expense, who will be responsible for correctly packaging the mattress and contacting a courier for transport, unless otherwise communicated by the merchant. The mattress must be returned in perfect condition to receive a refund of the price. Call the direct parties concerned to understand how the warranty works.

The 14-day right of withdrawal, as per regulations, can be considered as a mattress trial period, but many companies offer an extended trial period, such as the Ikea mattress trial period of 90 days, where the mattress can be returned but the return delivery and new collection are at the customer's expense, and the mattress must be returned in perfect condition. Who knows who will sleep on the returned mattresses! Anyway, on the Ikea website you will find the information
